5TH JUNE – WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
PRODUNAS ANNOUNCES THAT IT HAS BECOME A PROTECTOR OF THE KENTISH PLOVER (Charadrius alexandrinus)
This beautiful small bird is in danger of extinction because its habitat in Marbella (and elsewhere) is mainly on the beaches and dunes. These habitats are daily in serious danger of being destroyed, even by accident.
Our small contribution to protect it involves that we have reached an agreement with the Delegation for the Environment of Marbella Town Hall so that the machines that clean the beaches to the east of Marbella leave a 1m strip along the dunes
to give the bird somewhere to nest.
We are aware that the balance between protecting nature and the right to enjoy the sun and beaches is essential. An exhaustive daily cleaning of our beaches is a must so that we give an excellent service to those who use them – but we are convinced that even small actions are better than none!
The breeding period of the black-and-white Kentish Plover is from April until the end of July. The eggs are laid in a small hole dug in the sand. The chicks need about 25 days to learn to fly. These days are the most critical to guarantee their survival.
Let us all get to know and love this small, beautiful bird of our coasts.
