WE NEED YOUR COOPERATION
PETITION – MULTIFUNCTIONAL ARTIFICIAL REEFS TO PROTECT THE COASTLINE AND THE DUNES
We are campaigning to have artificial reefs installed in the 3 coastal zones to the east of Marbella (Elviria-Las Chapas) which have dunes.
Reasons to defending artificial reefs:
– offset more than 90% of the negative effects of storm surge
– create marine ecosystems with immense biological wealth
– compact the seafloor
– do not ruin the view from the beach
– do not upset marine dynamics or currents
We have carried out the necessary proceedings in:
– The Ministry of the Environment – Administration of Sustainability for the Coast and the Marine Area
– Costal Demarcation Andalusia-Mediterranean, Malaga
– The Ministry of the Environment and Planning
– The Provincial Council of Malaga
– Marbella Town Hall
We are putting together a team of professionals to draw up the Artificial Reefs Plan. The team will include:
– Marine Engineers
– Oceanography experts

We have been struggling peaceably over 10 years
for the dune area El Barronal de la Morena, after working for so long with the different Administrations as also with the Town Hall of Marbella. Sincerely we thought we would never have to get this information out.
We can be proud of havin been able to save more than 150m of the original dune from destruction, thanks to very good management and cooperation between ProDunas and Marbella Town Hall, with the 2010 PGOU (General Plan for Urban Construction) in place. The construction of 152 houses, which had been planned since 2006, was moved north, outside the legally protected area.
However, moving back to when the PGOU of 1986 was in force: we now are not able to prevent the construction of a public car park for 20 cars on top and to the east of the Right of Way in the El Barronal de la Morena” dune.
ProDunas and all nature lovers have to accept the legal status. A positive note is that 2 wooden walkways will soon be constructed so that everyone can walk down to the beach, and ProDunas has proposed linking both sides – east to west – by the shoreline walkway, also made of wood (Senda litoral).
Where Acacia shrubs (false mimosa) and Giant Reeds have taken over, rooting out down to whatever depth necessary to reach the roots of these invasive plants is being carried out right now (June 2019) so that works to reforest the areas along these planned walkways will be programmed.
As always, our thanks for your comprehension!
