TRAINING AND AWARENESS-RAISING CAMPAIGN ON THE NESTING OF THE BOBA TURTLE (Caretta caretta) IN ANDALUSIA
5th August 2024 – First Environmental Awareness and Education Seminar concerning possible nesting of sea turtles on the coast of Marbella
The Seminar given on 5th August by Seashore Environment and Fauna and coordinated by the Biodiversity Foundation and MITECO: “Training and awareness campaign on loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting in Andalusia” was very interesting.
The information provided by Carolina, founder and director of Seashore Environment and Fauna, was very useful for participants and members of the public in general, as it entertainingly taught how to recognize traces of a possible sea turtle nesting site; how to take photos of turtles so that you can easily find out which class they belong to; their physical condition; and their life process, among other details.
We consider these Seminars to be very appropriate as a means of imparting as knowledge to prepare our volunteers for the amazing task and challenge of being guardians and caretakers of the next sea turtle nest.
TRAINING AND AWARENESS CAMPAIGN REGARDING THE NESTING OF LOGGERHEAD TURTLE (Caretta caretta) IN ANDALUSIA
On Monday 5th August 2024, the First Seminar took place at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos in Marbella, announcing a training campaign to be given by Seashore Environment and Fauna and coordinated with the Biodiversity Foundation and MITECO.
All our Volunteers were invited to participate in this Seminar to familiarise themselves with what to do in the event of more Sea Turtle laying their eggs on the beaches of Marbella. The instructions are further explained in greater detail in the LIFE IP INTEMARES project (LIFE15 IP ES 012). “Integrated, innovative and participatory management of the Natura 2000 Network in the marine environment of Spain” Specifically, in action E2 “Environmental Awareness and Education Campaign”.
In recent years natural nesting has been observed on the coasts of the Spanish Mediterranean, on the beaches of Andalusia. We are facing a new scenario in the management of the Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta), which is a protected species so it is important for all sectors involved to work together.
The entire community has to get involved if a nesting is observed. Everyone must take part as volunteers in looking after and protecting these possible sea turtle nests, just as was done with the nest on the Mistral beach last year.
We will keep you up to date with developments.
