In an emotional act by Ángeles Muñoz Uriol, Mayor of Marbella, this panel of tribute to our Honorary President, Fernando PIQUER VILLARROEL was erected in the Adelfa Dune in Bahía de Marbella where it all began 20 years ago.

Back then, Fernando recognised the urgent need to protect and rehabilitate the remaining dunes on the coast to the east of Marbella. He began his work, peacefully fighting for the survival of a dune system that was in danger of disappearing. Being committed, he never stopped this work on behalf of nature and the beautiful biodiversity that exists in the coastal areas. This work is now recognised not only in Marbella and Andalucía but nationally and increasingly internationally. It has become obvious that dune systems protect the coast and the hinterland from the advances of the rising sea levels produced by global warming.

Many of our members and supporters came out to honour Fernando’s memory. Pro Dunas Marbella wishes to express its deep gratitude for their presence. The beautiful sensitivity of the panel was deeply appreciated. Fernando would surely have liked being reflected in its meaning and warmth, a reflection of his own personality. It fits perfectly into and enhances the dune environment.

The flagship of our Association, the beautiful Sea Daffodil (Pancratium maritimum) could not fail to be present. It frames the entire panel. Fernando loved this flower which blooms at high summer when every other plant has retreated from the burning sun. Thanks to his hard work it is increasingly visible, covering the dunes with its white florae.
