VALUATION OF THE DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE STORMS OF MARCHAT THE ECOLOGICAL RESERVE AND THE NATURAL MONUMENT “DUNAS DE ARTOLA”

Once again nature lashes the Marbella coastline. The S-SW winds blew directly on shore and affected all stretches of the beaches to the east of Marbella.

We could only watch impotently as the waves battered the dunes and the interconnected wooden stakes which had been placed along many stretches of the dune perimeter in the Dunas de Marbella-Ecological Reserve, tossing them round the beach as if they were toys.

We have to praise the great clean-up work carried out in record time by Marbella Town Hall so that the beaches could be seen at their best for the Easter break. However, the footprint remains: The Costa de Sol coastline has lost more than 2 metres of beach height and the dunes have receded more than 3 metres in the most affected areas.

The tree trunks and tons of cane that were washed up on the beaches only made the disaster worse. But we have to insist: the beds of the streams and creeks MUST be looked after throughout the year and the reed beds that flourish there eliminated.
Why do reed beds flourish? Because the machines clear them, cutting the canes off at ground level and do not dig out the roots as should be done.

As a result, the reeds recover and shoot up again quickly. When there is heavy rain in the sierra, the streams, taking the line of least resistance, rush down to the sea picking up all the litter and dead plants in the river beds on the way. When the inevitable blockage occurs, the water has nowhere to go; it spreads out and takes everything with it in its path down to the beach where it wreaks havoc.
