STATE OF ALARM FOR THE COSTA DEL SOL COASTLINE
Our opposition to such seismic prospectings is clearly to defend the preservation of the marina fauna and flora as they are a potential threat for the ecosystems maritime and -seaside. Several studies have shown that seismic surveys are absolutely incompatible with marine life for their physical, physiological and behavioural effects on the species inhabiting the areas where they are performed, and within migratory paths of dolphins and fisheries. We can confirm that in the planned area of intervention several dolphin families of all ages have their habitat, and they can easily be spotted from the shore as their diary course is perpendicular to the coast. These colonies of cetaceans would be directly affected by prospectings campaigns.
Back in the year 2005, our Association had to intervene both at the Naval Command as at the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce in reference to the seismic prospectings campaigns carried out by the “Atlantic Explorer” ship, because of the inevitable environmental, social and financial impacts that such oil prospecting could entail for Marbella and the Costa del Sol.
Back then, seismic prospectings were conducted at the following coordinates:
A: 004º 55’ 43,66’’ W – 36º 28’ 56,03’’ N
B: 004º 25’ 12,38’’ W – 36º 29’ 22,48’’ N
C: 004º 25’ 02.73’’ W – 36º 20’ 53,16’’ N
D: 004º 55’ 30,61’’ W – 36º 20’ 27,78’’ N
Our letters of complaint are addressed to all competent Authorities, requiring them to ensure the general interest of all citizens, by preventing any unsustainable damage to be caused along the shoreline of the Costa del Sol.
Well-kept beaches and preserved nature attract quality tourism, ensuring the welfare of all.
