THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCÍA SOUNDS THE ALARM:

The Andalusian ecosystem is under threat from the invasion of foreign exotic species. For years and more especially in the last four, ProDunas has been warning Marbella Town Hall that the Acacia shrub – known as false mimosa (Acacia saligna/salicina) – is spreading at an alarming rate in dune areas. The Giant Reed is also proliferating but to a lesser extent.

Acacias are absolutely detrimental to all life – even birds don’t nest near them. Nothing grows on the ground underneath the Acacias and the soil is so poisoned that autochthonous plants cannot develop there.  The Acacias release the gas methane which into the air and people sensitive to this can even get dizzy.

It is our effort to make Marbella Town Hall be aware of this proliferation so that together we can fight against this plague.

The Acacias are all over the place in the following areas, ousting the native flora and shrubs from their natural habitat:
– the Barronal de la Morena dune /  the Real de Zaragoza dune / the Las Golondrinas dune;
– the Natural Monument “Dunas de Artola”

WITHOUT ACTIVE HELP from Marbella Town Hall (providing the ESSENTIAL MACHINERY and OPERATORS)  the native flora in the Marbella dunes is going to be overtaken by the invasive species and our natural heritage of dune flora will no longer be there for us.
