HYBRID DUNES FOR PROTECTING THE BEACHES
In parts of Catalonia they are creating hybrid dunes (artificial dunes) thanks to the European Union’s OPERAs project (Operational Potential Of Ecosystem Research Applications), because they have come to realize that
WITHOUT DUNES, THERE ARE NO BEACHES!
In Marbella we are lucky – we have 13km of dune systems divided into 9 zones – which dump sand on the beaches when the storms hit. But we have to ask us – are we awarding these ecosystems the
importance they deserve?
In other municipalities the berm has to be seeded with beach grass (Ammophila arenaria) to allow dunes to form – in “our dunes” the grass is already established and its deep lateral rhizome roots help fix the sand on the dunes.
This is an appeal to everyone – help conserve our dunes so they can protect our beaches. Remember: WITHOUT DUNES, THERE ARE NO BEACHES!
