SATURDAY, 8th OCTOBER 2022
A GUIDED WALK FROM THE NATURAL MONUMENT “DUNAS DE ARTOLA” TO THE ARCH OF “EL PINILLO” (Marbella)

SPENDING A FEW HOURS SURROUNDED BY NATURE, CLOSE TO THE SEA AND IN THE HEART OF THE DUNES. This was temptation enough for a massive response to our invitation to take part in the walk on Saturday 8th October. We were swamped by an avalanche of registrations!

The different views and points of interest on the walk were fascinating to all ages:
– We walked along raised board walk in the “Dunas de Artola” Natural Monument,
– taking in stretches of the beach and
– searching out compacted paths through the dune environments

– to reach our final destination on the coastal path in El Pinillo.

Our monitors did a fantastic job, drawing everyone’s attention to the beauty of this Costa del Sol coastline. Nature itself got everyone taking photos, souvenirs for their albums.

We had organised something to drink at a little stop in Real de Zaragoza. The Sponsorship of an aperitif by the Trocadero Arena group in Río Real has been the summum and the highlight of the event.

We are honored by the sympathy and the praise of satisfaction that we have been able to hear. More than one now knows a beautiful nature, which is surviving in silence, despite the many difficulties and a very cruel summer due to the heat and dryness. At the Arco de Marbella > El Pinillo the bus was waiting for us to take everyone home.

We offer our most sincere thanks to all the participants, monitors, helpers, sympathisers and the Trocadero team! We promise that we will organize another walk in the spring of 2023!

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

VOLUNTEER DAY – FAMILY EVENT

This year’s theme hosted by Sweden in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is:

“ONLY ONE EARTH”

This means living in harmony with nature. It fully fits in with the spirit of our Environmental Association.

Many well-wishers want to be more actively involved in conservation work in the Natural Monument “Dunas de Artola”, and this seemed to us to be a magnificent idea. It motivated us to send a request to the Junta de Andalucía, directly to the Regional Delegation of Sustainable Development in Málaga to request their permission to organise an event, open to the public, in this unique natural environment.

When we received the authorization, we chose the ideal setting for World Environment Day to organise this new event taking on board the Swedish theme of living sustainably and in harmony with nature.

Program:

  • Dune conservation with a clean up and garbage removal;
  • Removal of dead wood in the pine forest to the north of the Natural Monument “Dunas de Artola”

Before the Environment Day, workers from the Regional Delegation have pruned the trees and removed the dead branches, so that our volunteers only have to take these and the logs to the public parking area of the Natural Monument “Dunas de Artola”, where a skip will be provided. In this way mishaps or accidents to the participants can be avoided.

Anyone who so wishes can take the logs resulting from the pruning of the Stone Pines home, or the chiringuitos can take them for their BBQs.

Very important message:

The Regional Environment Delegation has informed us that no pine tree that has died because of fire will be felled or pruned. It will remain in its place as part of the dynamics of the ecosystem. It will provide a natural contribution of organic matter and be included in the food chain for insects and xylophagous fungi. It has been observed that these dead trees also act as perches for birds. They are very useful to the animal kingdom.

RTV Marbella interviews the participants of the reforestation in the Torre Real dune

Sunday, 30th of January 2022 AN EVENT for MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
Creating biodiversity in the Torre Real dune!

7th November 2021 – WE HAVE KEPT OUR WORD!

The Jewel of Marbella, which is the Natural Monument “Dunes of Marbella” and which belongs to everyone in the municipality of Marbella who lives here as also in the Province Málaga, has been the focus of new and well deserved attention.

58 participants with young children have collected about 150kg of garbage and the skip supplied by the Cleaning Delegation of the Town Hall was filled to overflowing with 2.500kg of pine needles – now the ground underneath the Stone Pines can now soak up the water when the rains come.

We got rid of all the unwelcome garbage on the dunes – but hopefully it seems everyone who enjoys walking in the dune environment are raising awareness and cooperating dumping their food and drink leftovers in the bins strategically placed for that. Without knowing them, we thank them for this sensitivity.

To everyone: Olé for such friendly teamwork and a thousand times thank you to all who took part, especially to Antonio, from the Environment Delegation, who provided us with a tent and tables to so that the aperitif which Fernando our President, prepared for us, could be enjoyed in a comfortable setting. See you all soon at another event!

RTV Marbella interviews ProDunas Marbella

Rotary Club Marbella Guadalmina – Uebergabe der Urkund M.N.Artola: 23. Mai

YOUNG STUDENTS TRAIN

NATALIA conducted an interview with ProDunas Marbella regarding various aspects of the
environment and nature. She has to present this work to her Educational Centre in San
Pedro Alcántara:
Questions:
1 – Do you take care of the environment?
2 – When you were little did you also take care of it?
3 – Do you use a lot or a little energy?
4 – Do you reuse things?
5 – Do you take care of nature and why?
6 – Would you like to make a better world for plants and animals?
These are deep questions. Keep on, Natalia, you have already taken active part, working for
the good of the environment.

23rd OF MAY 2021 – A SHARED EVENT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE NATURAL MONUMENT “DUNAS DE ARTOLA”

We would like to thank the Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina for their active involvement in helping us with dune conservation in this unique environment in the province of Malaga.

Now there are less stands of Giant Reeds in the dune. They were really getting out of hand. The soil underneath the Stone Pines can now breathe a whole lot better.

Any time you want to come back you will be very welcome. We hope that then the sun shines beautifully and does not rain like today.

We hope that the sun shines beautifully and does not rain on us like today

 Thank you all.

Special Easter Event at the Natural Monument “Dunas de Artola”

We counted on about 5 people but 30 enthusiasts turned up! Beatriz gave them a short explanation as to what they should be looking for and they split up into small groups to search for clumps of the African Daisy (Arctotheca calendula) to eradicate.

The silence was almost spiritual. The beautiful but invasive flower was dug up with great respect. It is a native of the Cape Province of South Africa. The children enjoyed themselves and their parents enjoyed watching them.

In just 2 hours we filled more than 55 rubbish bags, a total of 300 kg. The Environment Delegation filled the pick-up truck to take the lot to the special “green” dump.

The reception our call for volunteers received was really gratifying! As always, a big THANK YOU to everyone who took part. We wish you all a Happy Easter. We hope you all had a Happy Easter.

A VIDEO FOR OUR MEMORIES – 28th February 2021 – EVENT IN ARTOLA
The video has caught perfectly the wonderful time we had when we broadcast the seeds of autochthonous plant species. The seeds must now start to germinate, to bring new wealth to this incomparable wild space.
We are, of course, hoping for a successful result from the seeding, but even more important is the awareness and sensitisation shown by everyone who took part.
This could be called:
𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 – and here is the proof, captured forever in this video.
We hope you like it as much as we do!
28th February 2021
EVENT – SPREADING NEW BIODIVERSITY
AT THE NATURAL MONUMENT “DUNES OF ARTOLA”, Cabopino
Of course we were lucky – 72 people had signed up and very few gave up because of the horrible weather! The forecast was for some rain, but while we were in the Natural Monument “Dunas de Artola” area it held off. Good warm clothing was however needed!

All the nature lovers came with a positive attitude, delighted to be out in the dunes and with a wish to help spread new life. We handed out the 50 bags full of seeds contributed by the Cantueso Natural Seeds family of Córdoba.

We explained to everyone how to sow the different seeds. Sowing seed in sandy soils is both easier and more complicated. If the seeds are left uncovered on the surface, birds will see and eat them. Other small animals also like berries and will eat them before they get a chance to germinate. On the other hand, if they are buried too deeply and the grain size of the sand is too fine, the seeds get buried, find it too difficult to reach the light, not have time to germinate, and rot. It is a tight scientific balance! In a year or so (we hope) we will be able to see the results of today’s work in the new biodiversity.

The participants even offered to do a little garbage collection – you have to see it to believe what was found in this precious and valuable natural environment! Everyone agrees that we have to come back to the Artola Natural Monument area again as there is still a lot of garbage left.

Fermín, our camera-friend, filmed today’s different groups at work and very soon we will be able to see what the camera caught. For the moment, our warm thanks to all of you who chose to ignore the weather and come out to enjoy the day with us.

CLEANING OUT THE DEAD PINE NEEDLES IN ARTOLA

WE JUST ARE AMAZED . . .with such a great participation! A big thank you to all who took part in the first hands-on activity of 2020!
Clearing out the ground cover, made up mainly of fallen pine needles, in the Natural Monument “Dunas de Artola”  was really well done, effective and fun!

It was a pleasure to greet 38 participants.

Our thanks go out to everybody, as also to the LEO’s and the Lions Club Málaga Gibralfaro who cames from Málaga and also to the spanish, german and english volunteers who came out to this beautiful place to help with the work.

MAGNIFIC SCUBA DIVING and BEACH CLEAN UP EVENT AT ARTOLA!

hat was a really fabulous event. We will do it again! We feel very proud:
More than 65 friends took part, including Firefighters, Civil Protection, Ambulances and First Aid personnel, MiMoana, Diving with Nick and sub aqua enthusiasts from all over Spain. We would like to mention very specially the members of the Environment Delegation from Marbella Town Hall – 3 assistants as also the responsable of Environment,  who worked so well in partnership with us. Congratulations on their superb organisation. We also thank for the political presence of José Eduardo Díaz, town Councillor of Security, who  gave the necessary emotionally back up to the diving crew of Civil Protection and Firefighters.

About 300 kg of different kind of rubbish has been removed from the seabed and the breakwater!
This once again underlines that united we are strong. Working as a team we will get the stabilising multifunction artificial reefs our beaches so badly need! Everything we do is for the benefit of our beaches and their coastal ecosystems,
to conserve the wealth of the sea by establishing marine reserves,
to encourage interesting sub aqua sports such as scuba diving, which are totally respectful of nature.

Last but not least, to foster our tourism that gives the seal of internationality to Marbella.
A big thank you to everyone and we count on your support at other events down the line!

A WALK ALONG THE MARBELLA COASTLINE
from the “Dunas de Artola” Natural Monument to Torre Real – 11km
including a visit to the Lance de las Cañas Tower

A wonderful, sunny Sunday tempted everyone to join the walk along the dune coastline.  67 people turned up to take part in a tour guided by 2 experts from Marbella Town Hall and ProDunas volunteers. They wanted to get to know just how rich the dune ecosystems that border the coastline (Artola Natural Monument and 9 dune areas) are.

It was an interesting experience for everyone and it ended up with an appetiser laid on by the Trocadero Arena Restaurant in Torre Real.

We would like to thank everyone who took part for their company and we are happy to have met new friends of nature.
Thank you!

WALK FROM REAL DE ZARAGOZA TO TORRE REAL

The day dawned sunny, with a gentle breeze – ideal for a walk of about 5km along the coastline, surrounded by the dunes.

We will always remember the beautiful images of the dune spring flora and the exquisite perfume of bitter chamomile (Helichrysum stoechas), rosemary and thyme. These sharpened our sense of smell.

We hope we have been able to draw attention to – even in a small way – the special dune landscape, to the flora and fauna that is native to Marbella’s natural heritage. We believe it gives us a reason to be proud.

The participants also timed their pace perfectly to that of the slower walkers –
Thank you to everyone in the group for the enjoyable company!

Clean Up Day in the Dunes of the Artola Natural Monument

The day dawned grey, drizzling and unpleasantly cold. The forecast did not bode well – but there were the selfless volunteers, on the dot, defying the miserable weather!

We want to express our warmest thanks to all those who took part – they deserve a medal. In just about an hour they had collected more than 300 kg of “interesting” garbage. We wonder if the day will ever come when we won’t have to have garbage collection days. That will be when everyone who enjoys walking through this dune environment will truly appreciate the beautiful site, and will not leave paper, plastic, tin cans or anything else.

Artola is unique in the Province of Malaga.

First guided “Walk in the dunes” – Between El Pinillo and Real de Zaragoza

We want to highlight the richness of the flora in the different dune systems on the Marbella coast. We walked along the boardwalks, hugging the coast and strolling through the dunes of the Ecological Reserve. A new and interesting experience. We had a gorgeous day, a really pleasant temperature and we were accompanied by a fantastic group of friends, all “nature lovers”. We all enjoyed the natural environment along the dune coast. We were able to get to know the unique dune vegetation which is so often unknown to the general public. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST. We hope to have you back on the dunes again soon.
