A VERY SPECIAL DUNE IS IN MELTDOWN

There has been a massive poisoning of invasive plants in the beautiful El Barronal de la Morena dune, in El Rosario / Playas Andaluzas. Unfortunately herbicide spraying also greatly affects native shrubs such as Mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus) or Wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris). ProDunas has brought this crime to the attention of all the competent Administrations and has condemned it in the strongest possible terms.

It is a disgrace that one of the most valuable dune ecosystems on our Costa del Sol can be subjected to such an irresponsible attack and that we find ourselves unable to do anything about it.

In the aerial photo taken in 2011 by the Dirección General de Costas the extent of the lush vegetation that then existed can be seen. The current photo ProDunas has had taken by an authorized drone operator shows the appalling tragedy that has befallen the dune in recent months.

ProDunas has struggled for many years to keep this dune intact. It is listed by University Professors as an exceptional dune because of the biotope existing there and it is included in the list of habitats in Annex I of the Habitats Directive 92 / 43CEE – European Union Network NATURA 2000 annual psamophil grassland (Ononido variegatea-Linarietum pedunculatae), graminoid community of mobile dunes (Lotus cretici-Ammophilletum australis), dune scrub (Crucianelletum maritimae) and psamophilic lentisci (Asparago albis-Rhamnetum oleoidis).

All local, regional and supra-regional administrations are obliged to preserve this great dune treasure. That is why ProDunas will fight so that this dune can survive the pressure imposed on it by third parties. To do this, we will continue to conserve it with environmental procedures, such as the “green” education that the Alborán School has included in its curriculum. They are sponsors of this dune environment. Other events, such as clean ups and garbage collection, will be organized by ProDunas.

This dune cannot disappear – it is the last remaining dune of this size in the Municipality of Marbella. We appeal to EVERYONE to help ProDunas to protect it.
