The Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning – Regional Delegation of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment in Málaga, has just issued a final resolution establishing an Ecological Reserve–DUNAS DE MARBELLA – which takes in all of the unique dune system still existing in the municipality of Marbella, in accordance with the provisions of Art. 11 of Decree 23/2012 of February 14 in which the conservation and sustainable use of the wild flora and fauna and their habitats are regulated.

This is the best news our Association and all nature lovers have received in the last 11 years (2004-2015). We are very proud to have been the driving force which, with great fighting spirit and a vision of the future has been working for so many years with patience and perseverance. Our good work has convinced the various public administrations as well as Marbella Town Hall that we have a natural treasure “under our noses.”

This Decision makes it all worthwhile. The huge effort and the myriad administrative procedures which were necessary to save the dune environment from destruction and preserve it for future generations vindicates our hard work. The dunes in Marbella are a treasure for the natural heritage of the municipality of Marbella.

The wild native flora, the birds and other small wildlife inspire many artists to capture it in their paintings or photographs. This biodiversity is unique in the Province of Málaga and many scientists are realizing this.

We will continue to work hard to maintain and improve the dunes by using the initiatives already put in place for the dune environment. New projects presented by our Association have their sights set on attracting families, children and all, to the dunes to enjoy them, while respecting the symbiosis between nature and citizens.

By fostering everyone’s awareness and the need for sensitive treatment, we will ensure that the dunes of Marbella will survive into the future.
