COMPREHENSIVE PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND PRESERVATION OF THEDUNES SYSTEMS OF THE BEACHES  “LA VÍBORA” AND “LAS CHAPAS”, ELVIRIA

In continuation of the line of preservation of dunes systems along the Andalusian Coast and gathering the voices of both residents and visitors, our Association have started the pertaining negotiations in the different Administrations and the City Council of Marbella, so that this beautiful dune, located on the beach La Vibora, Elviria, between the Beach-Restaurants “Perla Blanca” and “El Laurel” of approximately 1 km long, can be protected by installing wooden fences with accesses to the beach, to preserve the wild flora and thus boost the uniqueness of the existing eco-systems.

At the same time, this dune could well be included in the Environmental Education Programs that are presented to school children by the Town Hall of Marbella every year. Our youngsters will be able to follow up the first steps taken in favour of the environment, and these programs help raise awareness from a very young age. Once the ecological fencing in is completed, the Comprehensive Management could be started in the dune, with works for the eradication of invasive exotic plants and subsequent replanting of indigenous flora.

The project for the reconditioning of the Maritime-Terrestrial Public Domain includes also measures to be taken in the dunes “Las Chapas”, as well as the development of pedestrian trails between the beach restaurants “Tony’s” and “El Laurel”, that will be linked to the already existing trails in the dune of “La Vibora” in Elviria.

It is with initiatives of this kind that our Association is struggling to preserve the last dunes systems in the Municipality of Marbella; guaranteeing their survival it represents a natural heritage of huge value, even in spite of the mass development of housing estates.
