Example: Río Real bridge

BRIDGE over the REALEJO stream

to unite the Reserve de los Monteros and Bahia de Marbella urban developments

The Pro Dunas Association urges the Marbella Town Hall to commence negotiations with all the public authorities involved in the coastal path to plan and install a bridge over the Realejo stream to unite the future pedestrian walkway, between the Reserve de los Monteros and Bahia de Marbella urban developments.

Without a bridge, the public would have to leave the pedestrian walkway, go down to the beach, cross the stream and return to the walkway to continue their walk. Pro Dunas demand that no one has to swap their shoes and can avoid falling into the stream.

Pro Dunas demands this bridge over the Realejo stream as that afforded  to the other 2 bridges over the Rio Real and 7 Revueltas streams. In the rainy season all the rivers to the east of Marbella carry the same flow of runoff water from the mountains. All members of the public deserve to be able to have an uninterrupted walk or bicycle ride between Marbella and Las Chapas.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

The Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning – Regional Delegation of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment in Málaga, has just issued a final resolution establishing an Ecological Reserve–DUNAS DE MARBELLA – which takes in all of the unique dune system still existing in the municipality of Marbella, in accordance with the provisions of Art. 11 of Decree 23/2012 of February 14 in which the conservation and sustainable use of the wild flora and fauna and their habitats are regulated.

This is the best news our Association and all nature lovers have received in the last 11 years (2004-2015). We are very proud to have been the driving force which, with great fighting spirit and a vision of the future has been working for so many years with patience and perseverance. Our good work has convinced the various public administrations as well as Marbella Town Hall that we have a natural treasure "under our noses."

This Decision makes it all worthwhile. The huge effort and the myriad administrative procedures which were necessary to save the dune environment from destruction and preserve it for future generations vindicates our hard work. The dunes in Marbella are a treasure for the natural heritage of the municipality of Marbella.

The wild native flora, the birds and other small wildlife inspire many artists to capture it in their paintings or photographs. This biodiversity is unique in the Province of Málaga and many scientists are realizing this.

We will continue to work hard to maintain and improve the dunes by using the initiatives already put in place for the dune environment. New projects presented by our Association have their sights set on attracting families, children and all, to the dunes to enjoy them, while respecting the symbiosis between nature and citizens.

By fostering everyone's awareness and the need for sensitive treatment, we will ensure that the dunes of Marbella will survive into the future.

DRIVING THE "ECOLOGICAL RESERVE" PROCESS FORWARD

The Municipal Delegation for Sustainable Development (formerly the Department of the Environment) has taken a new step in the recovery and protection of the dunes of Marbella to ensure that all procedures are in compliance with environmental obligations and that an offer of sustainable tourism is presented.

Pro Dunas promoted an important meeting with the following:

- Representatives of the Ministry of Environment of the Junta de Andalucía

- Technical staff from the Department of Sustainable Development

- The Pro Dunas Association

The Town Councillor emphasised  the "good consensus" in which the meeting took place, which helped foster the exchange of information between the technical staff of the different Administrations. The presence of the citizens, represented by the Pro Dunas Association was very important, as we have been  working for many years to rescue and protect this natural heritage.

The Head of Delegation from the Department of Sustainable Development, Miguel Diaz Becerra, emphasized that this form of protection will increase the Las Chapas area to an international level, since the dune string is now well known.

Its rehabilitation opens a new way  to impart an awareness of our natural environment.

Classification as an Ecological Reserve will guarantee that, as well as protecting it and these areas can be used for educational, cultural and tourism purposes.

We hope therefore that Seville will soon declare the area to be an Ecological Reserve and that the City of Marbella assumes the foreseen maintenance and conservation roles needed to guarantee its future protection

Dune areas declared  "FREE OF INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES"

For statistical information we have put together two lists of the dune areas in the Municipality of Marbella which can be declared: "Free of Invasive Alien Species" (IAS). One of Pro Dunas undertakings is the control and eradication of alien plants in the dune areas in the Province of Malaga.

Pro Dunas’ information input is a valuable contribution and an important tool for the Ministry of Environment – the Regional Delegation of Málaga – enabling it to draw up a map of where the invasive alien species proliferate in the coastal areas.

5 MONTHS OF HARD WORK IN THE DUNES OF MARBELLA
Pro Dunas has fulfilled the mandate given to it by Marbella Town Hall

For more than 100 working days the Officers of our Association have accompanied a group of 4 workers from the ranks of the long-term unemployed who had been assigned to us to help with the hard work of effective dune maintenance.

The statistical data we can vouch for is, that the following: 60.000kg of roots of invasive alien species (IAS) were deleted, equivalent of 666m³ and filling a total of 41 tanks of a size used specifically for vegetable waste.

Pro Dunas devised a study program to be carried out in the different dune areas:

- Rehabilitation of the “Reserva de los Monteros” dune area  in preparation for future pedestrian board walks.

- Repairing of the wooden rails on the “La Vibora” dunes area.

- Setting up wooden stakes interconnected with sisal rope on the perimeter of the “La Víbora” and “El Arenal” dune areas.

- Burial of an irrigation pipe in the “El Arenal” dune area.

- Upgrading of the pedestrian accesses (4) to the beach in the “El Víbora” dune area.

- Grubbing out of Reeds and monitoring for resprouting in several dune areas.

- Providing assistance to the machine operators who were grubbing out false Mimosa and Cane.

The monitoring and direct assistance from Pro Dunas has enabled the operators to acquire basic knowledge of:

§         The correct way to grub out at root level the invasive alien species.

§         The management of the most common tools used in working in the friable dune soil.

§         The richness of the native flora and small fauna in the dune environment, etc.

Working daily as a team has guaranteed fruitful results. Mutual respect, cordiality, friendship and good humor have made them a strong and united team in the face of tough and demanding manual labour.

A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL FOR THE “EL BARRONAL DE LA MORENA" DUNE AREA

Our Association never gave up and our tenacity has now borne fruit - the dune area of the Municipality which has been treated worst has regained the square meters agreed in the negotiations which took place between the years 2009 and 2011.

This green lung, essential for all of us and for the wild flora and fauna is now having its fence erected in the right place (Zone of protection: 100m +50m) between the Urbanisations Las Chapas and Playas Andaluces in El Rosario-Las Chapas.

Our thanks go out to those responsibles for Town Planning for thus putting right a great injustice which had been done to a dune environment that has a huge reserve of native plants.

The responsibility now is in the hands of the different administrations, including the City of Marbella, to rid the dune of the invasive alien species such as False Mimosa (Acacia saligna) and Reed/Cane (Arundo donax), and to show off its beauty and become the habitat of first choice for different species of fauna in the dunes.

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR "LA ADELFA" DUNE IN BAHIA DE MARBELLA

The pedestrian walkway project along the Right of Way in the “La Adelfa” Dune put us in a dilemma regarding indigenous shrubs planted along this Walkway almost 10 years ago. We therefore prepared a dossier with extensive photographic documentation (www.produnas.org-The Association > Publications) and presented it to various institutions in June 2014 in an attempt to get the necessary help to save these shrubs.

We found invaluable support from the Malaga Provincial Council (Diputación Provincial de Málaga) which is giving us the necessary professional and logistic help to transplant these 40 beautiful shrubs from "La Adelfa” to other dunes in the municipality.

Based on the Costal Walkway (Senda litoral) project – this will run from Manilva to Nerja - the Malaga Provincial Council will sponsor a 1km stretch along the perimeter of the same dune and will install stakes linked together by sisal rope in line with the plans and the ambitious project that our Association has already begun.

The Málaga Provincial Council will also install an information panel at the foot of this dune, copying the style of the panels already in place honouring the various schools in the "Dunes Sponsored by Schoolchildren” program.

We feel honoured that this Institution together with the Community of Municipalities and the township of Marbella have accepted the challenge to launch a pioneering project such as this.

The dune ecosystems in the municipality of Marbella are being awarded the prestige and the support they deserve.

2015 – BEGINNING OF DUNE MAINTENANCE IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF MARBELLA

Our commitment to dune maintenance is ongoing. Since the beginning of January and continuing until end of May, together with some of the people enlisted in Marbella Town Hall’s "Basic Income" program, we are carrying out various maintenance and eradication programs associated with the invasive alien species (IAS) in the dunes of Marbella.

We have planned many such tasks and the entire dune area will be dealt with as needed. One of the most important jobs is the grubbing out of invasive alien species to stop them spreading. These are: Cane or giant reeds (Arundo donax) and False Mimosa also known as Golden Wattle (Acacia saligna).

Some dune environments will be protected by placing a wooden railing to stop people driving into the dune areas: the Maritime Terrestrial Public Domain (DPMT) take care of this, and by placing wooden stakes on the dune perimeters. This is another of the tasks we have in the pipeline. It is a private initiative by our Association.

The following dune areas are going to benefit from these measures:

• Reserva de los Monteros

• La Adelfa – Bahía de Marbella

• El Barronal – El Rosario/Playas Andaluzas

• El Arenal – Playas Andaluzas/El Arenal

• Real de Zaragoza – 2º stretch

• La Víbora – Las Chapas-Elviria

• Las Golondrinas – Las Chapas-Elviria

• El Alicate – Alicate Las Chapas

This is a pioneering endeavour and is very challenging. Pro Dunas will be on site every day, in charge of inspecting and supervising. In this way we will achieve a balance with nature here in our dunes.

We are counting on Marbella Town Hall to keep this up, year after year, between winter and spring, before the growing season.

February 2015

SCHOOL STUDENTS - USING SISAL ROPE - LINK UP WOODEN STAKES IN THE DUNE AREAS

64 school students from the Platero school, Las Chapas-Elviria, enjoyed a new experience during a Dune Sponsorship Day.

With great enthusiasm and in a real hands-on manner they worked together to link up 195 wooden stakes which will protect the perimeter of the "La Víbora” dune in Elviria.

The initiative which is the driving force behind Pro Dunas is paying off, thanks to the private sponsors who made it possible. From here we would like to thank them.

However, so that we can continue the work in the other dunes and for the initiative to be successful we need the involvement of new sponsors. We appeal for private participation from residents, hotels, Neighbourhood Associations or Communities of Owners. The survival of the dunes depends on us.

January 2015

PINE PROCESSIONARY PLAGUE ALERT!

We have detected a new plague of Pine Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) on the “La Adelfa” dune in Bahia de Marbella. It is affecting all the Pinyon pines in the area.

We have raised the alarm so that the area can be fumigated.

However, as a precautionary measure, we have cut off every infested branch in the dune area to ensure that there is no proliferation of this pest.

December 2014

DUNE "EL BARRONAL DE LA MORENA"

Playas Andaluzas-Las Chapas

We denounce the latest transgression by heavy machinery in this dune area, beyond the Protection border of 100m area (Servidumbre de protección) and affecting the +50m, in line with the agreements reached between the city of Marbella and the Developer.

4.960m2 of native vegetation have been destroyed by the machines. As a result, the soil has been completely degraded and any native flower and wildlife there, which was unique in the municipality of Marbella, has been destroyed.

We demand that the fence be moved up to +50m on the Urbanization Playas Andaluzas side and that the Administrations uphold and enforce the agreements which have been reached.

PRESENTATION: COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS AND SPONSORSHIP FOR DUNES PROJECTS

The positive outlook regarding the protection of the Marbella Dunes in the legal figure

MARBELLA DUNES - ECOLOGICAL RESERVE

Encourages us to look at other initiatives. Our Association is based on 4 Pillars:

1st Pillar: CITIZEN PLATFORM / 2nd Pillar: SPONSORSHIP OF DUNES AREAS BY CHILDREN

3rd Pillar :COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

As a result of the collaboration of employees in “collaboration days”, we have to get started involving other segments of citizens to be aware that we must look after the natural heritage. Many businesses will participate and will grant many free hours to their employees to help with environmental issues. This collaboration will improve the teamwork between them and awaken a new sense of collective awareness.

4th Pillar: SPONSORSHIP FOR DUNES PROJETS

We are going to look to making different dune areas even more beautiful, by placing:

- Wooden stakes connected by sisal ropes

- Wooden benches to enjoy marvellous sunsets

- Information panels in English and German (actually only in spanish)

- other suggestions are always welcome

Both Pillars are aimed at Businesses, Hotels, Communities of Owners and Volunteers in general. We aim at involving a wide segment of society.

In return for contributions, each Sponsor will be rewarded by being allowed to insert their name and/or logo on our website with a link to their company.

Maximum publicity
to this initiative would be greatly appreciated, so that this exciting project can be become a reality.

AWARDING OF ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATES

As we received such positive cooperation from the schools through the "Sponsorship of the Dunes by Schoolchildren",  we are now embarking on a new stage of working together which we will call:

3rd Pillar – Collaboration with Residents

We are seeking the collaboration of the following groups to motivate and involve them for environmental matters:

·         Companies

·         Hotels

·         Beach Restaurants

·         Communities of Owners

·         etc. etc.

Over the last few weeks we have been able to award Environmental Certificates to:

v  Marriott's Beach Club, Elviria

v  Booking.com, Malaga

v  El Arenal Beach Restaurant, Costabella-Las Chapas

v  El Laurel Beach Restaurant, Las Chapas-Elviria

Each Environmental Certificate is individually designed by our Association and carries the signature of the Delegate of the Environment of Marbella’s Town Hall.

We are really excited about this new initiative and we are sure that more companies will want to use our environmental initiative as a TEAM BUILDING exercise.

We invite our readers to help spread the news between their friends and relatives about this new venture so that more businesses can get involved.

Our thanks go out in advance to everyone who will get involved in gathering significant results which will benefit the DUNES AREAS in Marbella.

PRESENTATION TO THE PLENARY SESSION

“ECOLOGICAL RESERVE – SAND DUNES OF MARBELLA

The 27th of June was a very important day for our Association.

The councilman for the Environment presented to the Plenary session his motion regarding the advisability of supporting the initiative of Pro Dunas in relation to the figure of protection:

ECOLOGICAL RESERVE  - SAND DUNES  OF MARBELLA

Members of our Association were invited to attend this presentation and subsequent vote.

We were able to see, to our great satisfaction, that all the political groups raised their hand and unanimously voted the proposed motion.

It is an enormous success that a non-profit cause is so clearly supported by all political colours and an honour that the Natural Assets of the Municipality are properly valued.

The processing of the Technical Report is ongoing at the Junta de Andalucia (Regional Government) but with this vote the City Council has joined in, providing timely information from the Department of the Environment and Town Planning.

We are very close to achieving the unthinkable: That the sand dunes of Marbella are official acknowledged by all the relevant authorities to enjoy real protection for the future.

The attached link will give you access to the explanations of the Councilman of Environment, Antonio Espada during his speech and presentation of the motion.

We hope all members of our Association feel satisfaction and pride that we are achieving what no one has yet achieved!

NEW SAND DUNES AREA EMERGES IN  LAS CHAPAS-ELVIRIA

In March of 2010 Pro Dunas introduced the project:  Dunes “Las Golondrinas”, located between the two beach restaurants “El Laurel” and “Tony’s” in Elviria.

Finally, between December 2013 and January 2014, the Town Hall of Marbella performed a thorough eradication of invasive species: Willow Acacia (Acacia salicina) and Giant Cane (Arundo donax). About 70 tons with a specific volume of  529 square metres have been removed.

Underneath a thick mantel of rubbish and debris a gem in the shape of a dune has emerged, one more addition to the list of recovered dunes. For years and years, this sand dunes area East of Marbella, and specifically in Las Chapas-Elviria, remained hidden. This coastal strip is close to 250m in length, covering an area of about 10.000m of sand dunes.

A pedestrian walkway, 5 m above sea level, will extend the boardwalks to the beach restaurant “Cristina” on Avda. Hacienda Playa.

The rehabilitation project provides for reforestation with native plants, once the walkway construction is completed. The “Sponsorship of dune areas by schools” initiative is giving the opportunity to the German School Juan Hoffmann to sponsor this area known as “Las Golondrinas”.

With this new sand dunes recovery, thanks to joints efforts, our Municipality continuous to add assets to its Natural Heritage.

BEFORE

AFTER

RESTORING THE SAND DUNES  “EL ARENAL” COSTABELLA-PLAYAS ANDALUZAS

Thanks to the initiative “Sponsorship of Sand dunes by school children” there is a new perspective to complete the restoration and preservation project of this beautiful sand dunes area.

During the first phase, 3 classes from the secondary schools: IES Salduba, San Pedro Alcántara and IES Sierra Blanca,  have eradicated most of the invasive Highway Ice plant (Carpobrotus edulis).

The 2nd phase is ahead by almost a year, thanks to the collaboration of the beach restaurant “El Arenal”, who have sponsored us by providing 2 men over a period of 10 days to remove by grubbing:

80 Yucca plants (Yucca aloifolii)
80 American aloe (Agave americana) and hundreds of seedlings
  7 Pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana)

After much hard labour they were able to remove some 2.600 kg of these invasive plants.

This type of work cannot be carried out by the school children, as there is a risk of accidents.

Next year we will be monitoring the regrowth of Highway Ice plants in the 1st phase, and the school children will be able to remove those plants in the 2nd phase.

And with this, we shall have recovered one more of the unique dunes in this municipality.

April 2014

SHIELDING THE SAND DUNES OF MARBELLA

To ensure an effective and sustainable conservation over time, our Association submitted our new initiative

“Ecological Reserve – Sand dunes of Marbella

to the relevant Authorities and the Town Hall of Marbella.

This designation shall guarantee to shield the entire sand dunes system in the munici- pality of Marbella from any attempt of abuse encompassing the 12 different and unique existing dunes areas. It will serve as the perfect shield to protect this legacy for future generations.

The 10-year history of our group reaches its height by achieving this goal. It was worth it to work intensely and tirelessly for all these years, and having been the promoters who have contributed to the preservation of the sand dunes as ‘Natural Assets of Andalucia’ brings us great satisfaction.

The presentation of the project has been warmly welcomed by the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella, the Regional Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning and the Coastal Demarcation of Mediterranean Andalucia Authorities.

The chosen name: “Dunas de Marbella” (Dunes of Marbella) identifies and highlights the location of the sand dunes system in the province of Malaga and will be a reference for the general public as well as Authorities. The sand dune strip recovered along 17km of coastline represents an invaluable natural heritage of great cultural relevance and covers an area of approximately 500.000m2.

We are well aware of the responsibility we have taken on, and have submitted many projects that have raised the interest and support of the relevant Authorities. This legacy will be part of the environmental education presently received by close to 1.000 school children through our initiative “Sponsorship of sand dunes by school children”.

SECOND reforestations WITH NATIVE PLANTS IN SAND DUNES AREA “PALM BEACH”  RIO REAL/RESERVA DE LOS MONTEROS

As the machinery for the construction work of the pedestrian walkway in the sand dunes area of “Palm Beach” – Río Real/Reserva de los Monteros had crushed some 2/3 of the reforestation that was done during 2012, on the 14th of February 2014, we carried out a new reforestation with 400 seedlings of native shrubs, together with the Department of the Environments.

-IES Sierra Blanca (secondary school) have gotten in touch with “ their sand dune” in the programme of “Sponsorship of sand dunes by school children” and 47 students participated.

Given the amount of seedlings to be planted, we need an active collaboration, and this was provided by:

-Colegio Alborán with 33 students, who launched their sand dunes activities with this collaboration.

The Marbella TV interviewed several students and the President of our Association, as well as the Chief of the Department of the Environment.

NEW SIGNBOARDS BEARING THE LOGO OF THE  ECOS-Attendis SCHOOL IN THE SAND DUNE “LA ADELFA” – BAHÍA DE MARBELLA

We are slowly getting the Authorities to realize that the preservation of the sand dunes entails their upkeep, too, and there placement of the information signboards when weather ravages and the sunshine fade away the information on them.

Together with the initiative of Pro Dunas, the launching of the Sponsorship of the sand dunes by school children we have suggested that each dunes area have an Information signboard bearing the logo of the School as an incentive for the school children and information for visitors.

The sand dune“La Adelfa” in Bahía de Marbella is the first one to benefit from the new signboards, with the logo of the ECOS-Attendis school. The other sand dunes areas will show the same informations Schools join the Dunes Sponsorship project.

The event, besides the school children that took part, was attended by the Delegate of the Environment of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella, techni- cians of environmental education of the Town Hall, as well as representatives from the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occident (Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol). This initiative has spiked the interest of the Town Hall of Mijas, who requested our assistance in eradication tasks in their Municipality.

The event was duly reported by various media, both Radio/TV and newspapers
