NEEDFUL ANNUAL MAINTENANCE IN THE SAND DUNES AREAS OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF MARBELLA

We are getting there!  For the first time, and after much paperwork, begging and petitioning, the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella provided a team of workmen to perform maintenance and cleaning work on the sand dunes“La Víbora” in Elviria.

So far, our Association asked teams of gardeners to carry out eradication work of Willow Acacia, and reeds, both in the sand dunes “La Adelfa” and in the sand dunes “La Víbora”.

The next sand dune to undergo a similar maintenance work, with a team of workers, is “La Adelfa” in Bahía de Marbella. As it is an established dune, the work will be aimed at grubbing the reeds and Willow acacia along 1 km of sand dunes.

The Department of the Environment convened a press conference at the foot of the sand dunes “La Víbora” to highlight the excellent work that has been done, and Pro Dunas publicly congratulated the proven effort of the Town Hall of Marbella.

NEW!

SCHOOL CHILDREN SPONSOR SAND DUNES AREAS IN THE  MUNICIPALITY OF MARBELLA

Pro Dunas launched a new, innovative and pioneering initiative: School children are to sponsor sand dunes areas in the municipality of Marbella, an idea which is being very well received by the different Schools in Marbella, which have been contacted by us personally and individually.

To ease the participation of several elementary and secondary schools, Pro Dunas have divided all the sand dunes areas east of Marbella in 12 sectors. Appointing a school to each specific sector will enable the study of the biodiversity of the dunes “in situ” and help foster a greater awareness of the Natural Values that exist in Marbella.

This new venture of the Pro Dunas Association enjoys full support from the Department of the Environment of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella and the Regional Ministry of the Environment of the Regional Government, the Junta de Andalucía.

Through the educational involvement of the Schools and the Natural Sciences course, school children partake in the enjoyment of the privilege it is to have at hand a unique wealth of flora and fauna in the sand dunes settings of Marbella

EVICTION OF ILLEGAL PARKING LOT IN THE SAND  DUNES AREA “LA ADELFA” IN BAHÍA DE MARBELLA

During the holiday month of August Pro Dunas received complaints from Members of the Association, residents as also from Presidents of Residents Association and as well as from the “Macro-Comunidad Bahia de Marbella”, who were alarmed by the setting up of an illegal parking lot in the sand dunes area of “La Adelfa”.

Faced with such news, Pro Dunas immediately filed the complaint at the Department for the Environment of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella, and at Seprona Authorities (Guardia Civil).

Thanks to the prompt collaboration of the public, we succeeded in having that parking lot banned by the Authorities with determination and effectiveness.

Once again, civic cohesion has paid off, and we are very grateful for it.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE OVER THE “7 REVUELTAS” CREEK IN EL ALICATE, Marbella

Summer is here and the holiday makers have become aware that the first part of the improvement works in El Alicate have been completed, namely a bridge crossing the “7 Revueltas” creek, making it easier for pedestrian to walk along the shoreline of Marbella.

Thus, the walkway to be built on both sides of the bridge has now become a reality that will be completed as soon as Authorities can provide solutions to current and serious existing impediments.

Our Association have a close relationship with the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella, the Coastal Demarcation Authorities and the Territorial Delegation of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment for the rehabilitation of the small sand dune “El Alicate” between the beach restaurants  “Los Canos” and “Los Sardinales”.

This sand dune is included in the project that our Association submitted to the various Administrations in a dossier that involved a very thorough research.

Pro Dunas have been working tirelessly for nearly 10 years, to ensure that Authorities implement the proposed projects in the shortest time possible. Delays are therefore not the responsibility of our Association.

FORUM –  5th of June
        WORLD environment day

This year, the Department for the Environment of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella have provided the opportunity to the various associations of the municipality to introduce and make themselves known during the forum held on the 5th of June, which was the World Environment Day.

Our Association participated leading a tour of the 9 years of history of the Association, by means of a Power Point presentation, highlighting the success we have achieved, thanks to the perseverance of our members, volunteers and the involvement of the citizens. The presentation featured countless photographs, documenting the evolution and effectiveness of our proven efforts.

If by 2004 we believed that the one achievement of the Association would be the preservation of the sand dune “La Adelfa” in Bahia de Marbella, today we can proudly claim, with documents, that our Association is promoting the protection of 12 sand dune areas along a 17 km stretch of the coastline, between Marbella and the Natural
Monument “Artola” in Cabopino.

SCHOOL CHILDREN ERADICATE ALIEN SPECIES IN SAND DUNE AREAS IN MARBELLA

This is the fifth year in which we have dedicated two Days of Eradication of invasive alien species: Highway Ice Plant (Carpobrotus edulis) with pupils from secondary education schools and the active participation of technicians from the Department of the Environment of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella and volunteers of Pro Dunas.

We have selected the sand dunes “El Barronal de la Morena” in El Rosario-Playas Andaluzas, to begin the  recovery of this sand dune, which will need several rehabilitation activities because of the proliferation of the Highway Ice plant.

Over these two days, 85 pupils have proven that with joy and energy considerable success can be achieved. Photographs show the removal of some 5,000 kg of Highway Ice plant.

Local television stations have tracked the progress of this event and the Councilman of the Department for the Environment congratulated the participants for their commendable work.

PEDESTIRAN BRIDGE OVER THE RÍO REAL CREEK AND PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY ALONG THE DUNES AREA “PALM BEACH” – URBANISATION RESERVA DE LOS MONTEROS

Slowly but surely, the Town Hall of Marbella is linking the various beaches east of Marbella.

The novelty is the placement of a pedestrian bridge over the Río Real creek and the pedestrian walkway starting from Río Real-Reserva de los Monteros which will reach the sand dunes area of the Don Carlos-Marriott in Elviria.

With these improvements, the City Council intends to facilitate the walks along the seashore so that passers-by can enjoy nature, along the borders of the sand dunes areas.

There is a second bridge that will cross the “Siete revueltas” creek in Alicate, giving continuity to the promenade. We are very pleased that Marbella is not only known as an investment and financial spot or for its outrageous over-development, but also for an alternative on offer: bringing nature closer to the public.

THE 3 GARDENS FOREST PARK IN

SAN PEDRO ALCÁNTARA

95.200m2 of nature beckon to be visited by the citizens. This forest enclave has been created to enjoy the three different environments: a mediterranean area, a subtropical and an Arabic garden. With its pedestrian walkways, children playgrounds and the lake, it entices us to enjoy a day in pure nature with views to the sea, yet close to the bustle of the town of San Pedro.

CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE MAYOR AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE HON. TOWN HALL OF MARBELLA TO THE ASOCIACIÓN PRO DUNAS

XVII AWARD ANDALUCÍA ENVIRONMENT, “NATURAL VALUES OF ANDALUCIA” 2012

Mrs. Angeles Muñoz Uriol, Mayor–President of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella has convened a grand ceremony to congratulate in person the President, Mr. Fernando Piquer Villarroel and express the public recognition to the Asociación Pro Dunas, for the great work undertaken by our Association in defence of the “Natural Values” in the Municipality of Marbella.

Every congratulation and recognition by the Council of Marbella fills us with joy and pride. With thanks and enthusiasm, we hope to continue to rely on the active collaboration from this Council, so that all environmental values existing in the Municipality are renowned for their interesting biodiversity in their varied ecosystems.

The wealth of this natural heritage of Marbella, is worth being enhanced through Awareness Days organized for the general public and residents in Marbella, as well as scheduled guided tours provided by our Association, and offered to foreign tourists who demand options connected to nature, not just “sun and beach”.

Being at the forefront of time, we can spark interest for sand dunes environments and native vegetation.

CEREMONY OF THE ANDALUSIAN XVII ENVIRONMENT AWARDS FOR  “NATURAL VALUES OF ANDALUCÍA” 2012

Sevilla, 15th of January 2013: In a solemn ceremony, attended by HE. The President of the Andalusian Government, Mr. José Antonio Griñan Martínez and Mr. Luis Planas Puchades, Counsellor of Fisheries, Agriculture and Environment, as well as other personalities, has celebrated the delivery of the different modalities of the XVII Andalucía Environment Prizes that the Junta de Andalucía awards annually.

It is worth noting that our Association is the first non-profit association acknowledged to have initiated the protection of the “Natural Values of Andalucia”, tenaciously striving for years to make the recovery and preservation of the dunes areas still existing along the shoreline of the Costa del Sol become a reality.

Mr. Benito A. de la Morena, also honoured for his entire career, had very fond words about the history of our Association, dedicated from the very beginning of our wanderings to the preservation of the biodiversity of Andalucia and its environments. The varied and unique dunes eco-systems within the municipality of Marbella deserve to be protected and rehabilitated and should be included in all fields, and even be included in the  “PGOU” (General Urban Development Plan) of Marbella, as “Natural Values of Andalucía”. Above all, they are a value to be highlighted in the natural heritage of the county and the province of Málaga. Our citizens can be proud that such natural wealth is currently being recovered from degradation and oblivion, with the support from the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella and other Authorities.

We dedicate this Award to all the volunteers and nature lovers who spend many hours of their private lives to realize their dreams of protecting nature against any abuse. It is well worth striving for ideals and perhaps it might be an incentive to other groups of individualists who would like to contribute to enrich the Natural Heritage within their municipalities.

THE PRO DUNAS ASSOCIATION IS AWARDED WITH THE
ENVIRONMENT PRIZE ANDALUCIA 2012

The seventeenth edition of the environment prizes that the andalusian government awards annually, has been awarded this year to our Association Pro Dunas in the modality of “Natural Values of Andalucia”.

The jury which awards the prizes have acknowledged the continuing efforts of our non–profit Association, appreciating the different annual performances, highlighted by the multiple projects and actions related to the preservation, protection and maintenance of the dune areas in the Municipality of Marbella since 2004.

The granting of this award is the culmination of many years of struggle and unconditional labour and it represents the public acknowledgement to a team of volunteers who spend many hours of their time selflessly, because they believe in projects that impact on the common good of all citizens. With their solidary cooperation they are effectively part of the Association’s initiatives through its driving motto:

  • Working ceaselessly in defence of the unique ecosystems in natural environments and sand dunes areas, their native flora and fauna.

  • Promote the protection, preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the dune areas.

  • Raise public and authorities awareness to increase understanding on the need to safeguard the natural wealth and heritage in the scope of the sea and the coastline of the province of Malaga

We strongly believe that the environmental initiatives can promote the transformation of society through awareness workshops and outreach, as well as a respectful behavour and protection of nature, with the help of the younger generation in participatory programmes.

This award helps our Association’s commitment to remain firm in the preservation of the last dune areas in the Municipality of Marbella. To this end, we will continue to count on the good will and support of all Administrations involved as well as the Office of the Environment of the hon. Town Hall of Marbella, for the successful completion of all launched projects and currently on waiting list.

PLAN FOR CITIZEN COOPERATION IN THE RECOVERY AND REFORESTATION OF THE BURNT

HILL SIDES IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF MARBELLA

The fires that took place in late August in the mountains of the Province of Malaga, and the municipality of Marbella have caused great damage both to people and animals, and in particular to the more than 8,000 hectares of scrub have been reduced to ashes, a significant natural value.

Government, regional and local administrations did a perfect job at extinguishing the fires,
 effectively preventing even greater damage.

Teams of Environment technicians are currently studying the natural recovery of the affected areas in order to develop an Action Plan for the aftermath of the fires, depending on:

- Intensity of the fire

- Type of vegetation affected

- Impact of the first rains

- Hidrophobicity and edaphological conditions of the soil

- Orography of the area, etc.etc.

Our Association is cooperating in the Reforestation Plan and citizen/volunteers participation as well as schools, with the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella and the Regional Ministry of Environment, preparing for the moment when the reforestation of the area will be carried out from Autumn 2013 on

October 2012

SEASON END OF THE GUIDED TOURS

THROUGH THE “LA ADELFA” SAND DUNE IN BAHÍA DE MARBELLA

For the fourth year, and, during a 5 months summer season, our Association have been offering an alternative to sun and beach to foreign tourists, by scheduling guided walks on the sand dune
“La Adelfa” in Bahía de Marbella.

As usual, the foreign participants, most of whom were French from the Club 3000 (Paris), enjoyed the stroll through the native nature and keenly approached a world unknown to most of them: to watch, touch and smell the various aromatic plants that exist in these sand dunes.

Once more, our warm thanks go to our group of volunteers for their dedication and their good work throughout the summer. Without their active and constant participation, activities such as these tours could not be done.

September 2012

POSTERS TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS

The collaboration of the Department of the Environment of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella contributes and enables awareness campaigns for residents and tourists visiting the two sand dunes areas:

 “La Víbora” – Elviria

“Palm Beach” – Río Real/Reserva de los Monteros

This summer has been particularly troublesome due to the continuing acts of vandalism perpetrated in these two sand dunes areas. The thoughtlessness of a few leads to irreversible loss of developing flora.

To this purpose indicative POSTERS were made, giving an official status to our demand to foster respect for the native flora in passers-by and tourists. These posters have been produced in three languages for the first time: Spanish, English and German in order to facilitate understanding and cooperation of everyone.

With these measures, we hope to elicit interest in the future eco-systems that will consolidate the value of these sand dunes environments with a fascinating biodiversity.

WOODEN RAILINGS IN “LA RESERVA DE LOS MONTEROS” - Marbella

Our Association is pleased to have succeeded in getting the project of wooden railings for this sand dune area to be executed by the Coastal Demarcation Andalucia-Mediterraneo authorities right at the beginning of the summer season.

With this action to improve the sand dune areas, there are now three sand dune areas that have been enhanced for the enjoyment of visitors and residents, giving a positive value to the future promenade to be built along the eastern shoreline of Marbella.

July 2012

7th of JULY – DAY OF ACTION ON THE COAST - MARBELLA

In compliance with the Andalusian Volunteer program, this year’s event was held on the magnificent beach of Río Real-Torre Real to bring closer to the citizens as well as the tourists spending their holidays in the Municipality of Marbella, the different forms aimed at raising the awareness of all beach users, to help keeping clean
the beaches of the Municipality.

Around 50 collaborators and volunteers have contributed to the success of a new edition of “Day of Action on the Coast” through their attendance and work. A large group of divers from the AUAS Association, Malaga (University Association of Underwater Activities) have inspected the seabed and can testify to the absence of litter. Regrettably the search for prairies of Posidonia seagrass was fruitless because of the major degradation of the seabed caused by trawling in the area. The MERIDIANO Associations from Rincón de la Victoria and KAPITAN PLANETA, as well as volunteers have eradicated 1,500 kg of the alien invasive plant Highway Ice Plant (Carpobrotus edulis), and reeds.

The event was attended by the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella, with the active participation of the head of the Department of the Environment and environmental education technicians. The presence of the Head of the Deputy Mayor’s Office of Las Chapas and of an expert marine biologist of Aula del Mar, Malaga, conferred fair value on these relevant conservation works of Marbella’s seashore.

Pro Dunas express once more their thankfulness for the broad acceptance and cooperation of all participants.

WOODEN RAILINGS PROTECT THE SAND DUNES AREA
 “LA VÍBORA” IN ELVIRIA, MARBELLA

The Andalucía-Mediterráneo Coastal Demarcation Authorities have fulfilled their commitment  to fence in the sand dune “La Víbora” in Elviria, and by these measures, contributing to the protection of eco-systems in recovery.

The wooden railings not only aesthetically highlight the character of the sand dunes, but above all help preventing the entry of motor vehicles such as Quads and motorcycles.

Within the sand dune  “La Víbora”, four pedestrian walkways lead the way to the beach, and encourage the public to refrain from walking all over the dunes, given the fragility of newly planted seedlings.

These actions aim to raise awareness of the public, that their assistance is needed to ensure a peaceful growth of the vegetation in the coming years.

Everyone’s cooperation is essential for the recovery, the growth and evolution of a new habitat to become a reality.

CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL RECOVERY OF THE SAND DUNES AREAS IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF MARBELLA.

Once the rehabilitation of the sand dune and the replanting of native plants were completed in February of 2012, a group of our Members and volunteers nature lovers carry out an intensive weekly care of the 10 different species introduced in the
following sand dune areas:

“La Víbora” in Elviria

“Palm Beach” in Reserva de los Monteros/Río Real

“La Adelfa” in Bahía de Marbella

New outbreaks of invasive plants (Cane and Carpobrotus edulis) have to be eradicated every week to prevent further proliferation and new displacement of native flora.

This human effort helps the environmental recovery,

ensuring the establishment of new ecosystems with abundant

flora and fauna within a few years.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO REPLANTED THE “LA ADELFA” SAND DUNE
BAHÍA DE MARBELLA

Once the Coastal Demarcation Office have undertaken the necessary improvement works of the rainwater drainage to the beach, following the major damage it suffered in 2011:

24 students of the ECOS secondary school, in Elviria

replanted the restored area, so it can be integrated into the
existing native vegetation area.

In appreciation of the efforts of the school students, a group of members of our Association offered them a guided tour of the sand dune “La Adelfa” to brief them on the huge recovery of the lush ecosystems.  Technicians of the Delegation of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella participated with interesting explanations about the different sand dune formations and pointed out the native vegetation, already developed on the sand dune.

The information we provided will be used for articles in the future school newspaper of the ECOS school.

February 2012

MARBELLA’S HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS UNDERTAKE THE REPLANTING OF THE SAND DUNES AREAS OF THE MUNICIPALITY, WITH NATIVE PLANTS.

It’s a reality!

Our praise and acknowledgement go to the students who have participated with enthusiasm in the various replanting carried out during the past few weeks. They have proven, once more, that a nature conservation project can become a reality by working with solidarity and persistence. After removal of the proliferation of invasive Willow Acacia tree (Acacia Salicina) and Reeds in two sand dunes areas envisaged for the recovery of their eco-systems:

1.800 plants, supplied by the Regional Ministry of the Environment, have been planted in the following sand dune areas:

- Sand dunes “La Víbora” – Elviria: 1.350 plants Participants: 65 students from the secondary schools IES Guadalpín and IES Sierra Blanca

- Sand dunes “Palm Beach” – Reserva de los Monteros: 400 plants Participants: 40 students from the secondary school IES Sierra Blanca.

The assistance of our volunteers – members of our Association, as well as technicians of the Department of the Environment of the Hon. Town Hall of Marbella have facilitated the smooth running of the workdays. Press and local Television have witnessed these events.

The growth of this vegetation will take time, and from now on, our Association will assist in making the integration of the dune’s biodiversity become a reality in a few years.
